IIT Kharagpur’s new research says Civilization of Indus Valley 8000 years

A major study undertaken by a research group from IIT Kharagpur revealed some interesting facts. Indian researchers undertook major excavation across the Bhirrana sites of Haryana and found out that the ‘Indus Valley Civilization’ is comparatively older than previous calculations. The study also revealed that climatic conditions were not the sole reason behind the Harappa civilization collapse. The team that conducted this research comprised of ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), IIT Kharagpur team, Archaeology institute, DCP (Deccan College Pune) and PRL (Physical Research Laboratory). These findings were published in the known journal NSR (Nature Scientific Report) on 25th May 2016. The potteries that were researched during this phase dated 8000 years back.

TRAI launched DND Services (Mobile Application) for registering complaints

On 1st June 2016, the TRAI launched the DND SMA (Services Mobile Application) for its telecom subscribers for registering their complaints. Subscribers can compliant against SMSes and pesky calls. This new application will ensure easy registration of complaints as well as more effective monitoring by the authority. Before this, subscribers had to file compliant by SMSing to 1909. The application will be available on both Apple IOS and Android.

THOR, World’s first-ever 3D-printed aircraft displayed at the IAE (International Aerospace Exhibition)

On 1st June 2016, THOR (Test of High-tech Objectives in Reality), World’s first-ever 3D-printed aircraft was displayed at the IAE (International Aerospace Exhibition) in Schoenefe. It is a Drone resembling a large and white airplane model. It is the first-ever 3D-printed aircraft having just three parts. It weighs only 21 kgs; about 4 meters long and is windowless. It is faster, cheaper and lighter. Apart from the electrical parts, all others are 3D printed from polyamide (a substance). The inaugural flight of Thor took place in 2015 in Hamburg, Northern Germany. This radical innovation is expected to reduce aviation related carbon emissions to a huge extent.

Internet Saathi, a Tata and Google joint-initiative, launches in WB

On 8th June 2016, Tata Trust and Google jointly launched a new initiative named Internet Saathi in Kolkata, WB. The objective of this initiative is to reduce the gender gap in terms of digital knowledge across rural areas in the nation. For instance, in Purulia girls are now trained in terms of internet usage and also motivated to teach others. So far, this initiative is successfully running across 5 states and recently started in 4 more states. The bigger objective of this initiative is to empower women as well as their communities by educating them about benefits and usage of internet.

Microsoft released MII (Malware Infection Index) 2016

On 7th June 2016, Microsoft Asia released its MII (Malware Infection Index) for the year 2016. This index will be indentifying the major malware threats as well as rank markets across Asia Pacific. As per the MII 2016 Index, Pakistan has been identified as the highest malware encountered location. The other top locations were Bangladesh, Vietnam, Nepal and Indonesia. India Stands eighth in this respect. These findings were analysed from the MMPC (Microsoft Malware Protection Center) data and the MSI (Microsoft Security Intelligence) report. According to the report emerging nations across Asia are most vulnerable to malware infection. The most common malware encountered are Skeeyah Gamarue and Peals.

Scientists from Iceland convert carbon dioxide into Stone

Scientists from Iceland discovered a technique for capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) popularly known as greenhouse gas, by turning the gas into rock deep underground. This technique will be providing a faster and safer way to reposes carbon dioxide and limit the global warming due to this. This discovery has turned out to be extremely significant way in combating current climate change. The discovery was done under the CarbFix Project and was released on 10th June 2016 in the Science Journal. This method involving speedy carbonation can be extremely viable method for storing carbon dioxide permanently underground and without any leakage risk.

Tata Power signs agreement for acquiring Welspun Renewables

On 12th June 2016, Tata Power acquired WREPL (Welspun Renewables Energy Pvt. Ltd), a renewable energy service company. The objective behind this acquisition was broadening the clean energy portfolio of Tata Power to 2.3 GW (Gigawatts). The renewable energy division of Tata Power, TPREL (Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd) signed the agreement. It will be the biggest transaction in India across the renewables space. The value of the acquisition is estimated around Rupees 9249 crore. This will include wind power and 1140 Megawatts (MW) solar power assets of WEPL. It is expected that the deal will close by September 2016.

Union Government launched Scheme for establishing 1000 Mega Watt WPP (Wind Power Project) linked to CTU

On 15th June 2016, The MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy) announced the launch of a new Scheme for establishing 1000 Mega Watt WPP (Wind Power Project) linked to CTU (Central Transmission Utility) transmission network. The objective of this launch is facilitating wind power supply to non-windy states. The price has been fixed through a transparent bidding system. This launch is a part of the government’s bigger target of reaching a target of 175 GM energy from renewable fuels by 2022. Of this, 60 GW will be coming from the Wind Power

AICTE & Microsoft signed agreement for building an app for the HRD ministry introduced SWAYAM platform

On 17th June 2016, AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) & Microsoft signed agreement for building an app for the HRD ministry introduced SWAYAM platform. This will be a technical partnership wherein Microsoft will be building a massive mobile application system for SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds), a platform initiated by the HRD (Human Resource Development) Ministry. This platform will be launching around 2000 MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) that will reach more than 3 crore students by 2016. This deal will coast Rs. 38 crore to AICTE and Microsoft will be running this mobile application for 3 years after which AICTE will take over the app.

Tianhe -3 (Exascale Supercomputer) to be operationalized by China by 2030

Recently, it was announced that Tianhe -3, (the Exascale Supercomputer) will be operationalized by China by 2030. This supercomputer will be able to perform billion-billion calculations each second. China claims to operationalize this supercomputer 3 years before US’s plan of installing such computers. This development is a part of China’s national initiative in the arena of next-gen high-performance computers. China plans to complete this project before the end of its 13th five-year-plan (2016-2020). Government of TBNA (Tianjin Binhai New Area), NSC (National Supercomputing center) in Tianjin and NUDT are working together on this project.

DNWSH (Draft National Wind-Solar Hybrid) Policy 2016, released

On 14th June 2016, the New & Renewable Energy Union Ministry released the DNWSH (Draft National Wind-Solar Hybrid) Policy 2016.This policy is a part of the government’s plan of setting up 175 GW (Giga Watts) installed energy from renewable sources. The objective of this policy is to reach a wind-solar hybrid energy capacity of ten Giga Watts by 2022. This wind-solar-hybrid system will provide efficient and optimal transmission utilization infrastructure as well as superior grid stability.

Mobile app named URJA launched for enhancing consumer connectivity with the UPD (Urban Power Distribution) sector

On 16th June 2016, Piyush Goyel (Union Minister- Coal, Power, New and Renewable Energy) launched a new Mobile Application called URJA (Urban Jyoti Abhiyaan). This mobile app has been launched with the objective of enhancing consumer connectivity with the UPD (Urban Power Distribution) sector. The event took place during the Power Minister Conference at Cansaulim, South Goa. The Mobile App will work by providing important information of the IT enabled cities on significant parameters concerning the consumers. Few of the main parameters include timely connection release, power reliability, outage information, addressing complaints etc. The app has been developed by the PFCL (Power Finance Corporate Limited).

Sunway TaihuLight from China recognized as the fastest supercomputer in the world

On 20th June 2016, Sunway TaihuLight from China was recognized as the fastest supercomputer in the world. It showcased a speed of 93 petaflop/second. This announcement was revealed at the ISC (International Supercomputing Conference) in Germany. The list of TOP500 Supercomputers also confirmed that China is the top nation with biggest number of supercomputing systems. China has 167 systems whereas USA has 165. Indian-based organizations own 8 supercomputers from. The supercomputer Taihulight was created by the NRCPC (National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology). India became 35th full-time member of MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime)

India became the 35th full-time member of MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime) on 27th June 2016. The entry will benefit India in enhancing its global non-proliferation schemes. The membership was signed by S Jaishankar (Foreign Secretary). Additionally, this became India’s first-ever entry to MECR (Multilateral Export Control Regime). India’s membership in this group was previously obstructed by Italy. Overall, membership with MTCR will permit India to purchase advanced missile technologies. Furthermore, it will also enhance India’s joint-ventures with Russia.

Sweden inaugurated world’s first-ever electric road

Sweden inaugurated world’s first-ever electric road on 22nd June 2016. A stretch of this electric road was opened for test. This test was taken across some parts of E16 roads. There is a wired current collector that feeds the current downwards to the hybrid electric truck motor. These tests will be continued till 2018. Furthermore, knowledge will be provided on electric roads and how they work. Additionally, citizens will also be informed regarding the usage of this technology and precautions. Most noteworthy, this experiment is a part of the government’s sustainable 2030 goals. This goal includes fossil fuel-free vehicles fleet and energy efficiency by 2030.
