Baciro Dja conferred Guinea Bissau’s Prime Minister
On 26th May 2016, Baciro Dja was conferred Guinea Bissau’s Prime Minister. President of Guinea Bissau Jose M Vaz issued a ruling naming Baciro as the prime minister. Baciro will be succeeding Carlos Correia who got sacked during early 2016. His removal negatively impacted the political scenario across the West-African country. This presidential ruling has created many protests from opposition parties claiming the appointment to be unconstitutional. Guinea-Bissau is a West-African country covering an area of 36125 sq. kms.
Aditi Krishnakumar, Indian author wins 2016 Scholastic Asian Book Award
2016 SABA (Scholastic Asian Book Award) has been conferred to Aditi Krishnakumar. She is an Indian-origin author from Singapore. She was conferred with the award for her work “Codex: The Lost Treasure of the Indus”, a 32000-word manuscript. This manuscript had detailed deep Indian rooted history and had a contemporary feel that fetched Aditi ten thousand Singapore Dollars. Out of her two manuscripts shortlisted for the award, Codex was chosen. Scholastic Asia will be publishing the manuscript. Aditi has experience in the financial sectors of Singapore and India. She is currently residing in Singapore and is employed at ALR (Agent Lila Raman) where she is working in the Indus Valley Civilization’s mysterious script. In 2012, her first work ‘A whole Summer Long’ was published.
Real Madrid won the 2016 ECL (European Champions League)
On 29th May 2016, Real Madrid grabbed the 2016 ECL (European Champions League) by defeating Atletico Madrid (City rivals of Real Madrid). The match was a close affair wherein after a draw of 1-1, Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid with a penalty shootout. As of now, Madrid has won 11 European Champion titles. During the penalty shootout, Real Madrid scored 5 goals and Atletico Madrid scored 3 goals. The final penalty goal was shot by Cristiano Ronaldo. This is Atletico’s third final loss. With this win, the manager of Real Madrid Zinedine Zidane became the 7th man to win this trophy as a manager as well as a player. He was selected as Real Madrid’s manager in 2016.
Pinarayi Vijayan elected as Kerala Chief Minister
On 25th May 2016, Veteran Leader of CPI-M Pinarayi Vijayan was elected as the Kerala Chief Minister. His oath was administered by Governor of Kerala P Sathasivam and the secretary along with 18 other ministers of the office in Thiruvananthapuram. Vijayan won the KLA (Kerala Legislative Assembly) election 2016 from the Dharmadom constituency. Apart from him, the other ministers who were sworn included 4 from CPI and 3 from JD(S), Congress(S) and NCP. The BJP won this election in Kerala for first time. Pinarayi is a CPI (Communist Party of India, Marxist) member and was elected as a Politburo member in 2002.
Para athlete AK Saroha bagged Gold in the 2016 FOA (French Open Athletics) Championship
Para Athlete from India AK Saroha bagged Gold in the Men’s club-throw (F-21) during the 2016 FOA (French Open Athletics) Championship that took place in Paris. The event took place from 23rd May to 24th May 2016. Saroha’s winning effort was 26.58 meters that broke his own record which he set during the 2015 Doha World Championships. This FOA championship prepared Saroha for the Rio Paralympics Championships in 2016 which the Para athlete has already qualified. AK Saroha is an international-level Para athlete in Club throw and Discuss throw. He was the first Para athlete who represented India during the London Paralympics Games 2012. Lewis Hamilton grabs 2016 Monaco ‘F1 Grand Prix’
On 29th May 2016 Lewis Hamilton grabbed the 2016 Monaco ‘F1 Grand Prix’. After a tight battle with Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull), Lewis Hamilton came as a winner. The race took place in Monaco at a popular street circuit named ‘Circuit de Monaco’. This is the sixth race in the 2016 season. Lewis is one of the most popular British F-1 drivers hailing from England. He won the F-1 World Championships in the year 2015, 2014 and 2008.
Surajit K Purkayastha elected as WBP (West Bengal Police) Director General
On 30th May 2016, Surajit K Purkayastha was elected as the WBP (West Bengal Police) Director General. The surrogate will be replacing G.M.P Reddy who will be retiring on 31st May 2016. DGP (Director General of Police) Raj Kanoja of the Intelligence Branch who is Surajit’s senior has been given the position of the CG (Commanding General) and DG, Home Guards. Surajit has been serving the Indian Police services since 1985. Before this post, Surajit has worked as the COP (Commissioner of Police) of Kolkata.
Nico Rosberg wins 2016 RGP (Russian Grand Prix)
On 1st May 2016, Nico Roseberg, Formula 1 driver from Germany grabbed the (Russian) Grand Prix, 2016. This was Nico’s fourth consecutive win this season. He is Mercedes Driver. Second place was taken by Mercedes driver from United Kingdom Lewis Hamilton while third place was taken by Ferrari driver from Finland Kimi Raikkonen in this tournament. Fourth and Fifth place was won by RB Racing- TAG Heuer driver and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel respectively. The race took place in Sochi, Russia at the Sochi Autodom. The RGP (Russian Grand Prix) is part of Formula One WC.
RM Lodha Council formed to reform MCI
On May 2 2016, the Supreme Court of India decided to appoint a 3-member panel headed by RM Lodha, the ex-Chief Justice of India. The duty of this panel would be to keep a watch on the Medical Council of India and ensure that the operations are professionally been taken care of. The other two panellist are Dr. SK Sareen and Vinod Rai. The action was taken by the Supreme Court after incidents of corrupt practices were brought to the notice of the authority which previously prevailed in MCI.
Bharti Retail’s new MD is Kishore Biyani
On May 3 2016, the Chief Executive of Future Group, Kishore Biyani was appointed as the MD of Bharti Retail. The decision came shortly after Kishore Biyani resigned from his earlier post on May 1 2016. Earlier, Biyani’s contribution was seen in a wide spectrum which included outlets like Food Bazar, Big Bazaar, etc. In spite of his current resignation, he shall continue to hold office in the Future Group as a non-executive director. The appointment has led into a healthy development of relation between the Future Group and Bharti Retail. Later on, these two giants will be named as Future Retail Ltd. The deal has been struck at a price of INR 750 crores.
Mark Selby is the new World Snooker Champion
The world has a new Snooker Champion in the form of England’s Mark Selby. On May 2 2016, the final match of World Snooker Championship witnessed Mark Selby from England and Ding Junhui from China as the contenders for the number one spot. In a game of 18-14, Mark Selby went on to defeat his Chinese opponent and claim the number one position. This was Mark’s second trophy this year after winning Gdynia Open in Poland.
Craig Wright claims himself to be the creator of Bitcoin
On May 02 2016, an Australian Entrepreneur named as Craig Wright claimed himself as the creator of Bitcoin. In a conference, he explained how he used a pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto and implemented a channel to create Bitcoin. Craig was forced to reveal his identity after a dispute was raised by the Bitcoin community. Along with incidents, the entrepreneur was also able to provide technical proof of how the coins were brought into existence and owned by Bitcoin’s owner. Later on, the community and other members confirmed Wright’s claims and acknowledged his ownership over Bitcoin.
Vice-Admiral Sunil Lanba hired as Naval Staff Chief
On 5th May 2016, Vice-Admiral Sunil Lanba was appointed as the next Naval Staff Chief. At present he is serving as the FOC-in-C (Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief) of the western-Naval command. He will be assuming this position from 31st May 2016. He will be the 23rd Indian Navy Chief and 21st Indian Chief. India’s initial two Chiefs were from Britain namely, Admiral Sir CT Mark Pizey as well as Vice-Admiral Sir SH Carlill. Sunil Lanba will be succeeding Chief Admiral RK Dhowan as the latter will be superannuating from this position on 31st May 2016. Lanba will be serving a three year term till 31st May 2019.
Ireland re-elects Enda Kenny as their Prime Minister
On 6th May 2016, Ireland re-elected Enda Kenny as their Prime Minister. Kenny is the leader of FGP (Fine Gael Party) and was re-elected for this post after the general election did not produce any outright winner. After 70 days, Kenny was re-appointed as PM. 59 votes were in his favor while 49 votes were against him. While the Gael party was the winner in this election, they did not meet the quota required to rule minus any support. Kenny will be leading a minority FG (Fine Gael) government. Kenny will be the first member from Gael Party to be re-elected as Ireland’s PM.
Yash Chopra Conferred with special Bronze statue by Switzerland
On 4th May 2016, government of Switzerland conferred late filmmaker from Bollywood Yash Chopra with a special Bronze Statue. This Bronze statue that weighted about 250 kg was inaugurated in the country by Pamela Chopra (Yash Chopra’s wife) and Rani Mukherjee (Daughter-in-law of Yash Chopra). The statue was kept in the middle of Interlaken, inside Kursaal area. This area is very near to Switzerland’s Congressial place which is also a popular and prime tourists spot. Yash Chopra was awarded this honor as he filmed most of his movies across the nation thereby significantly increasing the flow of tourists from South Asia to the nation. Yash Chopra was also awarded honorary title of ‘Ambassador of Interlaken’ in the year 2011.
Mickey Arthur appointed as the head coach of Pakistan by PCB
On 6th May 2016, Mickey Arthur was appointed as the head coach of Pakistan by PCB Pakistan Cricket Board). He will be succeeding Waqar Younis. Younis gave resignation after Pakistan exited every early during the last World T20 match. Arthur’s previous experiences include coaching South Africa (From 2005 to 2010) and Australia (From 2011 to 2013). Arthur was recommended by the Cricket Committee panel which comprised of Faisal Mirza, Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram. This panel was formed with the objective of searching the right head coach for Pakistan’s Cricket Team. Arthur has played 110 first-class tests and ODI matches in the SA (South African) domestic cricket. He led Australia win 10 of 19 test matches played. The autobiography talks about the professional and personal life of the actor. Shashi Kapoor was born on 18th March 1938 as (Balbir Raj) Prithviraj Kapoor in West Bengal, Kolkata. He has worked in total 163 movies, both as child and adult actor. His first movie as a lead was Dharmputra (1961). Some of his best performances include Deewar, Kabhi Kabhi, Deewar, Trishul, Utsav and Waqt.

On 8th May 2016, Novak Djokovic who is currently the number one player won the MMO (Mutua Madrid Open) Title by defeating Andy Murray. The event took place in Spain, Madrid. Novak scored 6-2, 3-6 and 6-3 to defeat Murray and win this title. Djokovic has won five out of last six ATP 1000 Titles. The latest win will be the 29th Masters Titles in his kitty. On 12th May 2016, Indian-American Manjit Singh was selected as a member of the US President’s Advisory Board on Faith-Based as well as Neighborhood Partnerships. This announcement was made along with many other appointments that the President of US made. Manjit Singh heads Agilious, a STC (Software-technology Consulting) firm that was founded by him on 2013. Hardev Singh Baba (Nirankari Spiritual Leader) dies in a road accident in Canada
On 13th May 2016, Hardev Singh Baba (Nirankari Spiritual Leader) died in a road accident in Canada. The accident happened on the Westbound Highway-30, Montreal. Singh was visiting various sectors as he was touring and was visiting the Point-Claire Foundation. Born in the year 1954, Hardev Singh was instituted in the NSD (Nirankari Seva Dal) in 1971. His father, Gurbachan Singh was assassinated in 1980 after which Hardev Sigh took the leadership of the committee. He has more than 10 million followers across the world.
Fatma Samoura conferred as FIFA’s first female Secretary-General
On 13th May 2016, FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) announced the appointment of Fatma Samoura as FIFA’s first female Secretary-General (SG). Fatma (Samba Diouf) Samoura is a UN diplomat and will take over the role as Secretary General during first week of June, 2016. Before this, she will undergo various eligibility checked that will be administered by a review committee. This eligibility check is conducted as per FIFA Statutes’ Article 37. President of FIFA Gianni Infantino announced this progress during the 66th FIFA Congress-conference in Mexico.
Naveen Sinha elected as Rajasthan HC’s Chief Justice
On 14th May 2016, Naveen Sinha was selected as Rajasthan’s 31st Chief Justice of the HC. He took his oath in front of Kalyan Singh, the governor of Rajasthan as per provisions of Article-219 of constitution. His appointment was approved by Pranab Mukherjee (President of India) as per Article-222 provisions. Previous to this, he was recommended by the SCC (Supreme Court Collegium) chaired by CJI (Chief Justice of India) T.S Thakur. Before this new assignment, Justice Sinha was acting as Chhattisgarh HC Chief Justice since 2014. Born in the year 1958, Justice Sinha specializes in company, civil, commercial, service, labour, and constitutional and criminal laws. He has more than 30 years of experience in law.
Sania Mirza & Martina Hingis win 2016 ‘Italian Open title’
On 15th May 2016, the ‘Italian Open Title’ was grabbed by Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza. They are at present the top ranked women’s doubles pair. They clinched the title by defeating Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina by (6-1), (6-5)-7, and (10-3) during the final match. Martina is a Swiss Player and Sania Mirza represents India. Together, this was the Indo-Swiss pair’s fifth title. Till now, Hingis and Sania have clinched 15 doubles titles together. Sania Mirza started her tennis journey in 2003 and she retired from singles game in 2013.
Max Verstappen becomes the youngest F1 winner at the Spanish-Grand Prix
On 15th May 2016, Max Verstappen, a Dutch teenager became the youngest ever F1 (Formula One) race winner. He clinched the Spanish-Grand Prix by defeating Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari Driver) by 0.6 seconds. The third place was grabbed by another teammate of Max, Sebastian Vettel. During the race, Mercedes drivers Nico Roseberg and Lewis Hamilton crashed out after the first lap only. Max is former F1 player Jos Verstappen’s son.
Rupa Iyer, Indian-American teacher from US conferred with the Highest Teaching US Award
On 19th May 2016, Indian-American bio-technologist Rupa Iyer was conferred with Houston University’s DLITE (Distinguished Leadership in Teaching Excellence Award) award. This is the highest award in United States given to teachers. Iyer has been conferred with this award for her significant and sustained contributions across the educational sector. Currently, she is working with the Research & Graduate Studies departments of the Houston University as their Associate Dean. She is one of the founders of the bio-technology programme of the University. She has been working with the Houston University since 2005 and started as associate professor.
United Kingdom appoints journalist from India as their Deputy Mayor
On 19th May 2016, Philip Abraham (Indian Journalist and Councilor) was unanimously appointed as Loughton town’s (United Kingdom) Deputy Mayor. Carol Davis, newly-elected mayor presented the badge of Deputy Mayor to the councilor. Previous to this, VSK Menon was first Indian personality to service as Britain’s Councilor. He worked as the Labor Councilor between 1934 and 1939 for the Borough, St Pancras. Abraham is Kerala Link’s editor and won the Loughton Council in the year 2012.
Binali Yildirim to become Turkey Prime Minister
On 20th May 2016, Turkey government formally announced the next Prime Minister of Turkey. After a closed vote, Turkey’s present Transport Minister Binali Yildirm came out as clear winner. Binali was the only candidate for (AKP) Justice & Development Party leadership during a special event party of the congress on 22nd May 2016. Benali will be succeeding Ahmet Davutoglu who stepped down earlier after increased Erdogan-Public rift. Binali has been President RT Erdogran’s close ally for two decades. He was the DG (Director General) of (Istanbul Ferries Company) from 1994-2000.
Tsai Ing-wen elected as Taiwan’s first-ever women President
On 20th May 2016, Tsai Ing-wen was elected as Taiwan’s first-ever women President. Tsai will be succeeding Ma Ying-Jeou and swore her presidential oath during the ceremony as the parliament. Tsai, during her first press release after swearing the oath said that preserving status-quo in terms of relations with China will be a priority, provided Beijing respects the democracy of Taiwan. Before being elected, Tsai was the head of the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) which won the presidential and parliamentary elections by a huge margin. This marks DPP’s second victory in after 70 years. For past 70 years, the KMT (Kuomintang) has ruled Taiwan. DPP’s significant objective is independence from the Chinese province and with this win; the Taiwan government will be pursue on a similar objective.
Ratan Watal selected as the Social Sector- Principal Advisor at NITI Aayog
On 20th May 2016 Ratan Watal selected as the Social Sector- Principal Advisor at the NITI Aayog. He will be assuming the position for a period of 3 years. His appointment was approved and cleared by the ACC (Appointments Committee of the Cabinet) chaired by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. Before this, Watal acted as the Union Secretary of Finance from September 2015 to April 2016. Watal is an IAS officer of AP Cadre and holds an economics master’s degree. NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog was established during a Union Cabinet resolution on 1st January 2015 with the objective of replacing the current Indian Planning Commission. It aids in providing policy inputs and directional guidance to the Indian Government. Amitabh Kant heads NITI Aayog as its CEO.
Anurag Thakur elected as BCCI president
On 22nd May 2016, Anurag Thakur was unanimously selected as the 34th President of the BCCI (Board of Cricket Council of India). The selection was finalized during a SGM (Special General Meeting) held in Mumbai. Anurag will be serving as the President till September 2017. Thakur is an acting Lok Sabah BJP MP from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. At age 41, he becomes the 2nd youngest president of BCCI. In 1963, Fatehsinghrao Gaekwad was elected as BCCI Chief at age 33 becoming the youngest President ever. Thakur will be succeeding Shashank Manohar who was elected as the first independent chairman of ICC on 12th May 2016. Anurag’s father is PK Dhumal, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister.
S K Sharma selected as NPCI (Nuclear Power Corporation of India) CMD
On 23rd May 2016, SK Sharma, a renowned scientist in India was selected as the CMD (Chairman and Managing Director) of NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited). His responsibilities will include designing, constructing, commissioning as well as managing operations of the reactors of the plants. He will be working in this post for five years period. Presently, Sharma is Operations Director in NPCIL. The NPCIL is a government owned corporation with its headquarters in Mumbai. The company generates nuclear power which in turns generates electricity. The Central Government is the owner and its administration is managed by DAE (Department of Atomic Energy).
Kiran Bedi selected as Puducherry’s Lieutenant Governor
On 22nd May 2016, Former IPS and BJP Leader Kiran Bedi was selected as the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Puducherry. After a two years gap, a full-time Lieutenant Governor will be serving Puducherry. Bedi will be succeeding AK Singh. AK Singh is the LG of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and was holding this additional charge since 2015. After the sacking of Virendra Kataria (Former Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry) from his post, the position was vacant.
Sarbananda Sonowal selected as Chief Minister (CM) of Assam
On 24th May 2016, Sarbanand Sonowal (senior leader of the BJP and former Union Minister) swore as Assam’s Chief Minister. He took his oath in presence of the Governor of Assam PB Acharya and the state secretary at the Khanpara area at Guwahati. After 1958, this was the second instance wherein a CM took oath in open field. With this oath, Sonowal becomes that second tribal CM of Assam. The first tribal CM of Assam was Jogen Hazarika who was elected in 1970. Sonowal is also the first CM from the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in Assam.
