CR Sasikumar appointed as SBT (State Bank of Travancore) MD

On 1st June 2016, CR Sasikumar was appointed as the Managing Director of SBT (State Bank of Travancore). SBT is an associate bank of SBI (State Bank of India). Sasikumar started off as a SBI probationary officer in 1978. Since then, Sashikumar has been designated with various key assignments. Before being appointed as the MD, he was serving as the Deputy MD (Inspection and Management Audit) at the SBI Corporate House in Hyderabad.

Major General MG (Major General) Per Lodin selected as UN MOG (Military Observer Group) Head in Pakistan and India

On 8th June 2016, Per Lodin was appointed as the UNMOGIP (UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan) Head. Secretary of United Nations, General B. Ki-Moon approved the appointment of Lodin. General Lodin will be succeeding MG (Major General) DJ Sakyi from Ghana. General Sakyi will be completing his assignment of two years as the Head on 2nd July 2016. Lodin is currently heading SMM (Strategic Material Management) division at the FMV (Forsvarets materielverk). FMV is the logistics and procurement arm of the Swedish Defense Sector.

Famous Pakistani Qawwal, Amjad Sabri shot dead (H2)

Famous Pakistani Qawwal, Amjad Sabri was killed by unknown gunmen on 22nd June 2016,. He was travelling across the city’s Liquatabad area with his associate. He was best-known for his song ‘More Haji Piya’. Consequently, Amjad was one-of-the renowned qawwals and Sufi Musician from Pakistan. His father was Gulam F Sabri, yet another Sufi and Qawwal. Most noteworthy, his family is well-known for their significant contribution towards mystic poetry and Sufi. Furthermore, in 2014 Amjad was issued notice by IHC (Islamabad High Court) for blasphemy charges.

Dutee Chand qualified Rio Olympics (H2)

Noted sprinter from India Dutee Chand qualified for the Rio Olympics on 25th June 2016. She qualified for women’s 100 meter games. Consequently, she clocked 11.30 secs beating qualification marks 11.32 secs. She is an athlete from Orissa state. She is the second Indian women who qualified for this event. PT Usha qualified the 1980 Olympics. Most noteworthy, Dutee is also first woman from India to qualify after the introduction of qualification rounds for Olympics.

Anupam Pahuja appointed as PayPal India MD and Country Manager

On 22nd June 2016 Anupam Pahuja was appointed as PayPal India MD (Managing Director) & Country Manager. He will focus on PayPal India businesses. His task is to strengthen PayPal operations in India. Anupam’s prior job was with STS (Sum Total Systems) as India MD. PayPal is an online payment program operating worldwide. It is headquartered at California, US. PayPal is one of the biggest Internet Payment firms. PayPal was created in 1998. It performs payment process for auction sites, online vendors, commerce users etc. PayPal has operations in more than 180 nations. PayPal’S total revenue in 2014 was $7.9 Billion.

Aveek Sarkar resigned as ABP Chief Editor

Chief Editor Aveek Sarkar (Ananda Bazaar Patrika & the Telegraph) resigned on 22nd June 2016. He will continue as ABP’s chairman. Anirban Bhattacharya and R Rajagopalan were appointed as editors of ABP & the Telegraph respectively. Aveek Sarkar is one of India’s most prominent names in Indian publishing space. He was trained by world-famous Harold Evans. Aveek Sarkar took ABP’s Editor Post in 1983. He transformed AVP into a top national publication. He is also responsible for leading ABVs launch into television. Some of his major contributions were Penguin India formation, STAR News acquisition in 2003 etc.

Sanjay Malik appointed as Nokia India Head

Sanjay Malik was appointed as Nokia India Head on 24th June 2016. He will assume this position from 1st August 2016. Nokia is a multinational firm from Finland established in 1865. Malik’s overall responsibility will be leading customer operations. Furthermore, he will be driving business growth strategies across the nation. Additionally, he will be looking into engagement services for superior customer satisfaction. He will be working from Gurgaon office. Malik will be succeeding Sandip Girotra who held this position since 2011. Malik is presently heading NI (Network Implementation) division of Nokia. Malik has uniquely handled the growth of Nokia operations. He is also credited for giving strong performances in revenue efficiency.

Sujoy Bose selected as NIIF (National Investment and Infrastructure Fund) CEO

Sujoy Bose was selected as the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of NIIF (National Investment and Infrastructure Fund) on 27th June 2016. Union Government approved his appointment after he was selected by the DOEA (Department of Economic Affairs) selection committee. The committee was chaired by Shaktikanta Das (Secretary). Furthermore, Bose has innumerable international experience across sectors such as infrastructure and services. Additionally, he is also an experienced international investor fund raiser. Bose is presently working with the IFC (International Finance Corporation) and IFC works under the World Bank. Bose has 24 years of experience with IFC.

Lionel Messi takes retirement from International Football

Barcelona star Lionel Messi took retirement from International football on 26th June 2016. This announcement came almost hours after the loss of Argentina to Chile during the Copa America finals. Messi, who is 29 years old, started his international debut in football in 2005. Furthermore, he is the all-time highest scorer from Argentina. From 113 matches, he scored 55 goals. Additionally, Messi is the 1st player who won 3 EGSs (European Golden Shoes).

Gudni Johannesson won the Iceland presidential election

Gudni Johannesson won the Iceland presidential election on 26th June 2016. He is a history professor and ran in this election as independent candidate. Consequently, he secured 39.1 percent votes winning the election. Gudni will be succeeding Olafur R Grimsson, who ran Ireland for 20 years. Gudni’s foremost election motto was anti-establishment sentiment. Furthermore, the runner-up in this election was a businesswoman Halla Tomasdottir. Halla got 27.9 percent votes without having any party affiliation. Iceland President is majorly a ceremonial position. Their term is for four years and powers are limited. To sum up, the president acts as the guarantor for national unity and constitution and has powers to block the legislation.

BCCI selects Anil Kumble as ICT Head Coach

On 22nd June 2016 Anil Kumble was selected as the ICT (Indian Cricket Team) Head Coach. Kumble will be holding the position for 1 year. Kumble is one of the finest spinners from India. His first assignment as Head Coach will be upcoming West Indies Series. India will be playing 4 Test Matches. The decision for head coach was taken during a BCCI committee meeting at Dharamshala. The committee comprised of VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly as well as Sanjay Jagdale (Chief Co-ordinator). BCCI advertised for this position during May 2016. Out of the 57 people who applied, Anil Kumble was selected.

 

Lewis Hamilton grabs 2016 CGP (Canada Grand Prix) of Formula-1

On 12th June 2016, Mercedes Driver from Britain grabbed the Formula-1 CGP (Canada Grand Prix) Trophy. He defeated Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari Driver during the final round that was held at Montreal, Canada. This was Hamilton’s 5th career win and second consecutive. His previous records include wins in 2015, 2012, 2010 and 2007. He has won the Formula-1 World Championships three times in 2015, 2014 and 2008. This year, Hamilton also won the MGP (Monaco Grand Prix) on 29th May 2016. He is also the most successful Formula-1 driver from Britain.

Supriya Sahu (Senior IAS officer) appointed as Doordarshan’s Director General

On 15th June 2016, Supriya Sahu (Senior IAS officer) appointed as Doordarshan’s Director General. Supriya will act as full-time DG of this state-run broadcaster. The post was vacant for two years since 2014. The approval came from the ACC (Appointments Committee of the Cabinet). Previous to her, Tripurari Sharan acted at the full-time DG at Doordarshan till he stepped down in 2014. Supriya has also acted as the JS (Joint Secretary) for MIB (Ministry of Information and Broadcasting)

Sunil Mittal appointed as the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) chairman

On 15th June 2016, Bharti Enterprises founder and Chairman Sunil Mittal was appointed as the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) chairman. ICC is a Paris-based International commerce committee and the voting took place in Brazil. He will be the 51st ICC chairman and 3rd Indian Business personality to be voted as ICC chief. Mittal is another Indian businessman who became ICC chairman in the past. ICC is the biggest business organization in the Globe with more than 6.5 million business members across 130 nations.

Noted Telangana lyricist and poet Guda Anjaiah passed away

On 21st June 2016, Noted Telangana lyricist and poet Guda Anjaiah passed away. He died at his Ragannadudem house following a short illness. He was of 61 years age. His songs were both enchanting and aggravating and greatly influenced statehood movement supporters. His most famous song “Ooru manadi ra, ee vada manadi ra” has been translated into many languages. He was a key player in the Telangana movement and penned many songs which were later used in many films too.

Ken Miyauchi elected as SoftBank Group President & COO

On 22nd June 2016, Ken Miyauchi was elected as the SoftBank Group President & COO (Chief Operating Officer). This decision came quickly after the abrupt resignation of Nikesh Arora from this position. Prior to this, Ken was leading the Telecom arm of this group. Ken joined SoftBank in 1984. SoftBank Group is a Japanese Corporation in the internet and multi-national telecom sectors. SoftBank Group was formed in the year 1981. It is the 62nd largest organization across the globe.

G Kalyanakrishnan appointed as the CEO of NFC (Nuclear Fuel Complex)

On 8th June 2016, G Kalyanakrishnan (distinguished scientist) was appointed as the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of NFC (Nuclear Fuel Complex) at Hyderabad. Kalyankrishnan will be succeeding N Saibaba. Saibaba will be retiring after his 2 years of extended service period. Prior to this, Kalyankrishnan worked as the Deputy CEO of NFC. He is an experienced scientist in the field of commissioning and erection. Kalyankrishnan has a Chemical Engineering degree from REC (Regional Engineering College), Warangal. NFC was founded in the year 1971. It is a major manufacturer and supplier of reactor-core components and nuclear fuel-bundles to the DAE (Department of Atomic Energy), India.

Justice RR Prasad selected as Manipur HC Chief Justice

On 13th June 2016, Justice Rakesh R. Prasad was elected as Manipur HC (High Court) Chief Justice. He is Manipur’s senior-most judge. He will be succeeding Justice Laxmi K. Mohaparta. Mohapatra left his position on 9th June 2016. Before this, Justice Prasad served temporarily at the Jharkhand HC on the orders of the President. Justice Prasad was born in the year 1955 and grew up in Bihar. He started off as BSBC (Bihar State Bar Council) Advocate and practiced in criminal and Civil areas.

Nico Rosberg wins 2016 Formula-1 Europe Grand Prix

On 19th June 2016, Nico Rosberg won the 2016 Formula-1 Europe Grand Prix. He is a Mercedes driver from Germany who defeated Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari Driver) from Germany during the final round to win the title. This was Nico’s 2nd career Grand Championship win and 1st European win. His first career trophy was the 2016 Russian Grand Slam. Overall he has 19 titles under his kitty since 2006. The Formula-1 event was launched during mid-1980 and was a regular event from 1999 to 2012.

Two-year suspension for Maria Sharapova for failed drug test

On 8th June 2016, Maria Sharapova received a suspension from Tennis for two years. The suspension came from ITF (the International Tennis Federation) because of usage of a drug that was prohibited. Her suspension period will be from 26th January 2016. Maria Sharapova, who plays for Russia, was banned from the Australian Open in 2016 March after she was tested positive for the banned drug Meldonium. Meldonium is a drug that modulates the metabolism and is prohibited under the WADA list of Prohibited drugs. Her Australian Open 2016 results will be disqualified with her ranking as well as the prize money won as the event.

Pedro P. Kuczynski wins the Peru-Presidential Election

On 9th June 2016, the National ONPE (Office of Electoral Process) announced that Pedro P. Kuczynski political organization won the presidential election by winning majority votes which was 50.12 percent of the valid voted. Pedro won over his competitor Keiko Fujimori by a very thin margin and became the next President of Peru. The gap between the votes for winning and losing sides was only 41434. Pedro P. Kuczynski is a popular economist, public administration and politician from Peru. He was Peru’s Prime Minister in 2005 and 2006.

SP Jain selected as member of Law Commission

On 10th June 2016, former Parliametarian and ASG (Additional Solicitor General) Satya P. Jain given part-time membership of the 21st Indian Law Commission. He will be taking this additional responsibility while keeping his post as the ASG of India. Satya Pal is a known constitutional lawyer as well as senior leader of the BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party). He is also Punjab University’s Law Faculty Dean and Member of PUS (Punjab University Senate).

Saina Nehwal wins the AOSS (Australian Open Super Series) Badminton trophy

On 12th June 2016, Ace shuttler from India Saina Nehwal grabbed the AOSS (Australian Open Super Series) Badminton trophy in women’s category. The event took place in Sydney. Saina defeated Sun Yu from China in the final round to lift the trophy. The award prize that Saina won for this trophy was US Dollars 56250. This was Saina’s 2nd AOT (Australian Open Title); the first one was won by her in 2014. Apart from the above prize money, Saina will also be receiving Rupees 10 lakhs as reward money from the BAI (Badminton Association of India) for winning this Super Series Tournament.

Legendary Ice-hockey player Gordie Howe dies

On 10th June 2016, Legendary Ice-hockey player Gordie Howe died after a long illness. Gordie was 88 years old. Gordie had a popular nickname ‘Mr. Hockey’ and is considered as one of greatest Ice-Hockey player ever. Born in the year 1928, Gordie spent his childhood in Gordie. He had a total of 26 NHL (National Hockey League) as well as 6 WHA (World Hockey Association) in his kitty. He took his retirement in 1971.

Inder Malhotra, veteran journalist passes away

On 11th June 2016, Inder Malhotra, veteran journalist passed away. Inder was 86 years old. Malhotra was the The Statesman’s (resident) editor in Delhi. He served at this post from 1965 till 1971. During this period, he was also The Guardian’s Indian Correspondent. He was also TOI (Times of India) editor from 1978 till 1986. From 1986 onwards, Malhotra had been writing columns for various periodicals and dailies in India as well as abroad. He also authored Indira Gandhi’s personal and political biography in 1991.

Bipin Patel elected as the President of GCCI (Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry)

On 18th June 2016, noted businessman Bipin Patel was elected as the President of GCCI (Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry). He will be succeeding Rohit Patel and will be working for term 2016-17. This decision was taken at the AGM (Annual General Meeting) of GCCI. Also, Shailesh Patwari has been appointed as Senior VP (Vice-president) of GCCI. The GCCI was established in the year 1949 by Amrutlal Hargovandas and Kasturbhai Lalbhai, pioneer Gujarat industrialists.

 

Shahid Rasool appointed as CEMCA (Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia) Director

On 7th June 2016, Shahid Rasool who is a known communication technology expert was elected as the CEMCA (Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia) Director. Shahid will be guiding CEMCA in it ‘objective of ensuring the efficient usage of educational resources and media for distance-education programs. Before this, Rasool acted as EMRC (Educational Multimedia Research Centre) Director, Kashmir University. He has a Communication Technology Master’s Degree and doctorate in Journalism and Mass Communication. CEMCA is a part of Vancouver-based COL (Commonwealth of Learning) with its headquarters in Delhi. It was established in the year 1994. The objective of establishing this program was putting a bigger focus on the distance education system. CEMCA works across 8 nations: India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Maldives, Brunei Darussalam, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza grabs 2016 FOWST (French Open Women’s Singles tennis) title

On 4th June 2016, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza grabbed the 2016 FOWST (French Open Women’s Singles tennis) title. The event took place at the RG (Roland Garros) Stadium in France. 22 year old Garbine clinched her first ever Grand Slam award. With this, she also becomes the first women from Spain to win this title since Sanchez-Vicario’s Paris win in 1998. Garbine defeated world champion from USA Serena Williams in an interesting set of 7-5, 6-4 during the final round. In 2015, Garbine lost to Serena Williams during the Wimbledon finals.

Dia Mirza chosen SSP (Swachh Saathi Programme) Ambassador

On 6th June 2016, Dia Mirza was selected as the brand ambassador for SSP (Swachh Saathi Programme). It is an internship program for students and is a part of the SBM (Swachh Bharat Mission) scheme. Dia Mirza was chosen for this position as Dia is a popular youth icon as well as an active Swachh Bharat campaigner. Her position as brand ambassador will help in connecting to more youths and make them a part of the program. Her position will involve meeting with college and school students across the nation through community cleaning programmes, awareness sessions as well as motivational videos.

 

Ashok Lavasa selected as the Finance Secretary

On 31st May 2016, Ashok Lavasa (Senior IAS Officer) was selected as Finance Seretary of the Finance Ministry of India. Lavasa is an IAS officer from Haryana cadre (1980 batch) and currently acting as Expenditure Secretary in the Finance Ministry. The post of Finance Secretary was vacant sfter Ratan Watal retired in April 2016. Ratan then took over as the social sector-principle advisor in NITI Aayog. Ashok has served in various positions in the Indian government including Ministries such as Renewable Energy, Power, Envrionment and Civil Aviation. He also co-authored a novel ‘An Uncivil Servnt’ with RM Sethi (Chairman of Stellar Group and former IAS officer).

AR Rahman honored with Japan’s ‘Fukuoka prize’ 2016

On 30th May 2016, celebrated music composer from India AR Rehman was honored with Japan’s prestigious Fukuoka Award 2016. He was given this award for his significant contribution in creating, preserving as well as popularizing the traditional-fusion music of South Asia. Rahman will be receiving this award alongwith noted historian from Phillipines Ameth Ocampo and Yasmeen Lari of Pakistan. Last year, this award was given to Tamchandra Guha, well-known Indian Historian. Rahman has received many international awards over the years such as Malaysian Award and MNA (Mauritius National Award) in the year 1995 for his work towards music.

Rahul Johri elected as BCCI’s first CEO

On 1st June 2016, Rahul Johri was elected the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), a position that did not existed in the organization until now. Rahul was appointed as the CEO after recommendations from the JLC (Justice Lodha Committee). Rahul will be reposting to Ajay Shirke, BCCI secretary and will be working at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. His major responsibility will include smooth workflow of operations, establishing extensive strategies for sports promotion and stakeholder management.

P Sreeramakrishnan appointed as KLA (Kerala Legislative Assembly) Speaker

On 3rd June 2016, P Sreeramakrishnan appointed as KLA (Kerala Legislative Assembly) Speaker. He is a LDF (Left Democratic Front) candidate which is currently ruling party. He also rules the Ponnani constituency legislation twice. During the voting process, Sreeram grabbed 92 votes against VP Sajeendran of UDF from the Kunnathunadu constituency who could secure only 46 votes. Earlier on 25th May 2016, Pinarayi Vjayan (CPI-M veteran) was elected as the12th CM of Kerala. The current ruling party won after a gap of 5 years.

Muhammad Ali, Greatest boxer of all time, dies

On 3 June 2016, Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer of all time died. He was staying in Phoenix, Arizona. He was seventy-four years old and suffering from Parkinson disease for the past 32 years. Ali was born in 17th January 1942 as CMC, Jr. (Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr). He is regarded as the greatest boxer in the history of sports. BBC has conferred him as ‘Sports personality of the Century’ and Sports Illustrated has conferred him as ‘Sportsman of the Century’. He had also written many best-selling books on his career such as ‘The Soul of a Butterfly’ and ‘The Greatest: My Own Story’.  He was the only boxer to have won the WHC (World Heavyweight Champion) award three times, in 1978, 1974 and 1964.

Navin Agarwal elected as NADA (National Anti-Doping Agency) DG

On 3rd June 2016, Navin Agarwal was elected as the DG (Deputy General) and CEO (Chief Executive Officer of the NADA (National Anti-Doping Agency). His appointment was approved by the ACC (Appointment Committee of Cabinet) headed by Narendra Modi. He will be serving this post for a five year term. NADA is a registered society set up under the SR (Societies Registration) Act, 1980 on 24th November 2005 with an objective of establishing a dope-free sports system in India. Some of its goals include implementation of anti-doping rules according to WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency), regulating the dope-control program as well as promoting research and education in creating awareness regarding the side effects of doping.

Novak Djokovic beats Andy Murray to win 1st French Open title

On 5th June 2016, Novak Djokovic grabbed the French Open award. Novak, who is currently the number one tennis player of the world, defeated Andy Murray of Britain to clinch the title. Novak has won this French open for the first time and overall he has 12 big titles in his kitty so far. Out of the 12 titles, he has 6 Grand Slams from Australian Open, two US Open titles and three Wimbledon Open titles. In terms of number of titles, he is behind just three stars namely Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal as well as Pete Sampras.
